Prohibition
Economic:
After the eighteenth amendment, many people started to buy more homemade alcohol or
"bathtub gin." They spent more money on alcohol then they had before. Also,
gang members such as Al Capone or rich men would have "speak easy" bars where
they would sell illegal alcohol. Although prohibition created animosity and was
not liked by many people, it did bring in more money in the U.S. Also, saloons
closed so many middle class men lost their jobs.
Social:
Alcohol was a large part of the U.S. in the 1900s. Taking alcohol away had large
consequences socially. Many people did not like prohibition so they ignored it
or protested against it. It created more of an uneven social class because the
poor found it expensive due to it being illegal and in "limited" supply. More
crimes came to be because of gangs emerged and violence broke out in the cities.
Prohibition gave another area that gangs could benefit from.
Political:
The 18th Amendment was added to the Constitution. There was not enough
reinforcement so many people did not follow this amendment.
Also, many political leaders were not following the law. For example,
Daugherty was illegally drinking and licensing liquor during prohibition time
and was an attorney general during Harding's presidency.
