1) Civil rights Act 1964
Passed under LBJ's term, it banned racial discrimination in most private facilities open to the public, strengthened the federal government's power to end segregation in schools and other public places, created the federal EQual Employment Opportunity Commission which eliminated discrimination during hiring, and as a bonus, included the prohibition on sexual discrimination.
2) Prevent af. Am. voting
Southern states such as Mississippi prevented Blacks from voting by using the poll tax, literacy tests, and intimidation. Mississippi law actualy required the names of prospective black registrants to be published for two weeks in the local newspapers, which guaranteed economic reprisals and hazing.
3) 24th amendment
Abolished the poll tax in federal elections. Ratified in order to fight against the prevention of African American voting.
4) MLK in Selma
King's voter-registration campaign in Selma, Alabama. Demonstrators were attacked and suffered the wrath of tear gas. A minister was killed in action, and a woman was shot a few days later.
5) Voting Rights act 1965
Passed following the atrocities of the Selma Campaign. It outlawed literacy tests and sent federal voter registrars into several southern states.
6) Watts Riot
Five days after the Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed, a riot broke out in Watts. Blacks angered by police brutality burned and looted their own neighborhoods for nearly a week. Many people were injured and killed.
7) Malcolm X
A charismatic preacher, Malcolm X advocated separatism and violent resistance. He was cut down by rival Nation of Islam gunmen while speaking to a large crowd in NYC.
8) Black Panther Party
A violent Civil Rights group that used weapons for self defense. They exchibited the violent approach to civil rights.
9) “burn, Baby burn”
The chant of black mobs as they attacked police officers and firefighters as they set fire to buildings. Such a riot took place in Los Angeles and many other cities.
10) Not just a “southern” question.
Northerners were were baffled as riots also took place in the northern cities. Also, in the north, Blacks focused more on economic demands, for unemployment was double that for whites.
11) Death of MLK
MLK was killed by a sniper's bullet in Memphis, Tennessee. His death triggered an orgy of violent riots.
